foods that love you back

I am a big fan of food. I mean, can you just imagine how boring life would be if we didn't have to eat? So much of our entertainment is built around food and drinks... what would a baseball game be without hot dogs and beer? What would a hot summer pool day be without soft serve ice cream? What would my childhood be without peanut butter and jelly sandwiches?!!

So I think we can all agree that we love food... now how great would it be if our food loved us back?!

I'm talking about beneficial eating here. Eating good food that does good stuff for your body. You are a walking precious commodity, and it is your responsibility (not your mother's) to keep your body functioning well for the long-haul. You may not feel the effects of pizza rolls and processed peanut butter when you're a ravenous high school punk, but the older you get, even into your 20s, it all starts to catch up with you. Adult acne, chronic sickness, hard-to-lose weight, migraines, aching joints... it's all connected to what we eat and how we take care of ourselves.

I identified with most of those awful symptoms just a few years ago. I didn't eat well growing up, and it wasn't my mother's fault. I just ate whatever I wanted because I was hungry, it was there, and my body never noticeably changed because of it, at least at the time. And here's the thing: our society loves processed foods. We go crazy for it. We're total suckers. It's quick, easy, and they say it's full of nutrients, but really it's full of chemicals. The FDA doesn't do us any favors by how poorly they regulate packaging.

After feeling completely exhausted by the way I was feeling, I decided to make a switch in the way I looked at my food, and I think that you can too! After doing this for about 6 months, I finally started feeling and seeing the benefits: brighter, clearer skin, a toned, less "puffy" body, more buoyant joints, more energy... I started viewing my food as sustenance, as something that could do good for me (or bad, depending on what I chose). So, I encourage you to choose foods that are full of naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, proteins, and carbohydrates! Choose to experience the benefits of eating well.

Most of the time, at least. I generally stick to the 80/20 rule, where I eat like that 80% of the time, yet give myself space for custard-filled donuts, gummy bears, and Cokes. I find that by consciously deciding to eat by this rule, I am more inspired to eat well.

So this is what I find SO FUN about being able to own and operate my own food business... I know and love every single ingredient that goes into each jar of nut butter, each batch of granola, and each superfood bomb. They all do something amazing for your body. Zero chemicals, none of the fake stuff, nothing cheap. Just pure, unadulterated good food (a.k.a. pure and good food... get it?! ha!).

Maybe today you make a pact with yourself to start changing your perspective on what you take into your body daily. Perhaps you start substituting your lunch of processed turkey and cheese on processed bread (which all virtually have no true benefits) for an organic wrap with almond butter, banana, and berries (protein, potassium, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants). Yum! I will start adding more delicious meal/snack ideas on the recipe portion of the website, to give ya'll some pointers on how to practically eat more foods that love us back, on a daily basis. How about that?

So I encourage you to be intentional about what you put in your body, because it really does matter. What simple changes can you start implementing immediately to your daily food choices?

At Pure & Good Foods, we care about what you put into your body... do you? :)
